Scouting Scratch: High minors bullpen arms (5.28.15)
2015 Top 40 Season in Review
Traded to Seattle with Wade Miley for Carson Smith and Roenis
Elias (December 2015) |
Physical Description: Thick, filled-out frame. Sturdy
lower half.
Limited projection with his body. Bigger than listed.
Mechanics: High 3/4 arm slot. Short, jerky delivery. Arm short
behind, with some deception from his body. Works quick, good rhythm. Can
struggle to finish his delivery consistently.
Fastball: 91-93 mph. Tops out at 95 mph. Solid-average
potential. Heavy with late life. Jumps on hitters. Difficult to pick up. Has had trouble
locating pitch arm-side. Two-seam has late arm-side run at 87-89
mph. Throws strikes, average command.
Changeup:
82-84 mph. Solid-average potential. Solid arm speed, shows late dive.
Potential to miss bats.
Slider: 83-86
mph. Above-average potential. Short, vertical break. Sharp with
tight rotation when at its best. Confident throwing the pitch in any
count. Throws both a shorter, more cutter like version and longer,
sweepier version. Used to throw a slurvey
breaking ball 78-81 mph with short, 11-to-5 break.
Career Notes:
Although he has worked out of the bullpen for most of his career,
typically works longer outings, whether planned or due to consistent
positive results. Signed later than most international free agents
because of bouts with Dengue fever in 2008 and 2010.
Summation: Future
6th/7th inning reliever
profile. Throws strikes, workable fastball/slider combination. Needs
to improve changeup, and consistency with slider. Lacks late inning
ceiling, but high floor. |
