Scouting Scratch: Notes from the backfields (3.19.15)
2015 Top 40 Season in Review

Physical Description: Tall, lanky frame. Skinny at present, but athletic. Projectable frame with plenty of room to fill out as he matures. High, thin waist and young face. Lacks present strength.

Hit: Raw at present. Slight open stance with a wide base and slight crouch. Starts with his hands high. Uses a toe tap and short stride. Quick hands, but lacks strength so bat drags through the zone. Rudimentary approach and pitch recognition skills. Aggressive and often gets caught out in front against off-speed pitches. Lot of swing-and-miss in his game. Really struggles against pitches on the inner half and up in the zone due to arm bar in swing. Struggles against velocity. Below-average potential with the hit tool and a long way to go to reach that point.

Power: Well below average at present. Lacks strength, but has shown ability to square up the ball with backspin. Too early to tell on power potential, a lot depends on how he physically matures.

Arm: Plus arm. Glove-to-hand transfer is on the slow side when charging in on balls. Plenty of arm for any outfield spot.
Field: Covers ground with long strides. Tracks fly balls well. Comfortable going back on fly balls. Solid range. Routes could use some work. Can play center field currently, but with physical maturation could end up in right field. Potential plus defender if he retains present athleticism.

Run: Plus speed. Speed shows more in the field when he is chasing the ball down or when he gets going after making contact rather than with stolen bases.

Career Notes: Participated in the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Fall Instructional League.

Summation: Aybar is a raw outfield prospect that you can dream on if he fills out his frame. The gap between where he is now and what he could be is significant. Needs to add strength and take major strides at the plate, but defensive potential means if he can hit enough he has the upside of a reserve outfielder.
