Rusney Castillo flashes exciting... (9.10.14)
The Write-Up: Rusney Castillo (9.16.14)
Short, strong, lean, athletic build.
Maxed out physically. According to Baseball America, has put on 20
pounds of muscle since defecting from Cuba.
Hit: Plus bat speed. Hands are quick through the
zone. Uses a short stride. Line drive-oriented swing with slight uphill plane.
Length in swing. Solid bat control. Wants to hit; aggressive
first-pitch swinger. Expands the zone, but knows what he can handle.
Pull hitter. Potential solid-average hit tool.
Max-effort swing. Strong for his size. His obvious strength generates
his bat speed. Power most likely to manifest as line drive doubles to
the gaps rather than home runs. Below-average power potential.
Arm: Plus arm strength when he lets it fly, but
doesn't always show that type of arm strength.
Average speed and athleticism should allow him to cover plenty of
ground. Won a Gold Glove in Cuba.
on his feet, accelerates quickly when he goes all out. Was timed at
4.1 seconds to first in Cuba according to Baseball America, but speed
has regressed as he has gotten older. Average speed. Will steal a
handful of bases, but not a major part of his game anymore.
Summation: Could be an excellent fourth outfielder, or
maybe even a second-division starter, but contract situation creates a
quandary for his career. Unlikely that any team will think his salary
would be worth bringing him up the big
leagues, particularly given change to recent CBA that no longer allows
teams to remove salaries from CBT calculation via outright, so is likely stuck in Triple-A for the duration of his contract.
