Traded to Baltimore for
Alejandro De Aza and cash (June 2015)
Physical Description:
Physical, big frame. Filled out. Decent athlete for size.
Mechanics: Low three-quarters arm slot somewhat minimizes
height, but still gets solid extension. High effort delivery. Arm wrap
behind body.
Fastball: 88-92 mph. Average
potential. Jumps on hitters late. Low arm slot tough to pick up. Arm-side
run. Generates weak contact. Pitch plays up due to arm slot.
Slider: 79-82 mph. Solid-average potential. Big sweeping
breaking ball. Long horizontal movement, but lacks tilt. Showed bite and
could be a solid secondary offering. Confident in pitch.
Changeup: 80-84 mph. Fringe-average potential. Sink,
lacks feel. Doesn’t throw often.
Career Notes:
Showed big-game prowess in college, being named the Most Outstanding
Player at the Division II national championship as a sophomore. Began his
pro career working out of the bullpen, but moved into the rotation early
in 2014 after continued dominance in relief.
Summation:
Future sixth/seventh-inning reliever. Fastball/slider combo especially
effective against right-handed batters, but delivery gives lefties a good
look at the ball. Knows how to pitch. His two-pitch mix easily overwhelmed competition
in the low minors, but will be tested by more advanced hitters. Could be
fast-tracked if moved to a traditional bullpen role. With continued
development of third pitch, could profile as a back-end starter. |
