 Notes from the Field (3.22.17)

 Selected by
Detroit in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft (Dec. 2018)
 |
Physical Description: Strong, physical frame. Muscular build.
Very strong lower half. Looks the part, minimal projection. Average athlete.
 Hit:
Starts square with his bat on his shoulder. Slight leg lift. Lots of
moving parts in swing. Happy feet. Front side will bail and has the
tendency to pull off the ball. Swing is very stiff in the shoulders; lacks
	  fluidity. Fringe-average bat speed.
Likes to get extended and pull the ball. Fair amount of swing-and-miss,
struggles with off-speed pitches. Hit for a high average in 2016 with
Lowell, but made a lot of weak contact that fell in and eluded defenders.
Bat speed will be tested by velocity as he moves up the ladder.

Power: Below-average raw power. All game power is to pull
side. Has shown the ability to drive the ball with backspin on occasion.
Will hit his fair share of doubles.

 Arm:
Below-average arm strength. Lacks carry and accuracy.

Field: Left field-only profile due to lack of arm strength and
poor instincts. Gets turned around too often and has trouble picking the
ball up off the bat. Takes inefficient routes, slow first step. Average
range. Club gave him some time in center field,
but doesn’t project to play there in games.

 Run:
Average speed. Slow out of the box, but can move once he gets going. Needs
to work on reads on the basepaths. Gets caught stealing too often.

Career Notes: Participated in 2015 and 2016 Fall
	  Instructional League.

 Summation: Projects as a
bat-first, organizational player. Lacks baseball instincts. All-bat, left
field-only profile limits upside. Will have to hit at every level. Type of
player that won’t be taken as a serious prospect until he proves he can
hit upper-level pitching. If he can improve defensively and project as
even average in left field, future value will change.
