Trade Analysis: Scouting the Light for Abad deal (8.1.16)
Traded to Minnesota for Fernando Abad (August 2016) |
Physical Description:
Tall right-hander with long and lean frame. Has body to add weight as he
physically matures into his mid-twenties.
Mechanics:
High three-quarters arm slot. Works solely from the stretch, from the
first base side of the rubber. Quick to the plate. Some effort in his
delivery, but decent weight transfer and stride. Creates downhill leverage
with delivery.
Fastball: 94-97 mph. Live arm, has
reportedly touched 100 mph. Heavy pitch that shows late life and finish
down in the zone, but flattens out when elevated. Average control, fringe-average command. Plus-plus potential offering, but could be held back by command profile.
Splitter: 84-87 mph. Threw pitch in college, but had not
done so as a professional until 2015. Throws with deceptive arm speed.
Pitch shows late tumbling movement. Bottom falls out of the pitch at its
best. Generates swings and misses. Potential out pitch at the big league
level. Already shows plus-to-better potential.
Slider: 85-87 mph. Had average potential, but graded
as below-average. Showed depth and late break off the table. Needed
improvement with consistency of keeping arm in slot. Shelved pitch in
2015.
Changeup: 79-81 mph. Was a work in progress.
Did not show strong feel for the pitch. Scrapped in 2015.
Career Notes: Moved to the bullpen full-time in 2015. Suffered a
torn hamstring in May 2013 that was initially misdiagnosed before
all-but-ending his season in June. He returned in late August for a rehab
assignment and one game in Greenville.
Summation:
7th inning set-up man potential with improved command and
consistency with splitter. Can air it out in the bullpen and rely on
fastball/splitter mix. Could stand to reintroduce his breaking ball at
some point to keep hitters honest, even if he uses the pitch sparingly. |
