Physical Description:
Solid frame,
strong core and upper body. Has added more strength as he has physically
matured.
Hit:
Changed swing mechanics prior to
2017 season. Still starts with hands down and brings them up during load,
but now utilizes a leg lift and altered swing path designed to put the
ball in the air. Previously used a toe tap for load and timing. Has strong
feel for hitting and knack for making hard contact. Uses all fields. Swing
can get long and has a tendency to come around the ball. Solid-average bat
speed, but can struggle with plus velocity up in the zone. Potential
average hit tool.
Power:
Ball carries off the bat. Has shown
the ability to hit the ball out of the park in batting practice,
but over-the-fence power has not translated to games yet as he has
struggled to elevate the ball. Changed swing in 2017 to attempt to change
groundball-heavy batted ball profile. Above-average raw power with average
game power potential once he physically matures.
Run:
Fringe-average runner with above-average instincts. Aggressive on the base
paths, but knows his limits. Looks to take the extra base when possible.
Field: Has the versatility to
play both outfield corners and first base. Solid defender with
strong instincts, soft hands, and good footwork at first base. Average
range for left field. Is still working on his reads off the bat and routes
to the ball. Can play right field in a pinch.

Arm:
Above-average arm strength. Has the
arm for right field, but played mostly left field during his
time in the Reds organization, when he got significantly more
outfield time than he had late in his first stint with the Red
Sox.
Career Notes:
Committed to LSU before signing.
Lifelong Red Sox fan would likely have gone to school if drafted by
another organization. 2014 season ended in mid-July due to a torn UCL in
his thumb. Was traded to the Reds in July 2017 for international
bonus pool money. Less than a month after being traded, suffered an injury
that led to Tommy John surgery. Had multiple offers as a minor
league free agent before re-signing with the Red Sox in December 2019.
Summation:
Potential platoon or bench player at the big league level. Average defensive profile with average hit and power potential. Positional
versatility could be key for him going forward, as his offensive profile
is not an ideal fit at first base.
