Scouting Scratch: Fall Instructs Part Three (10.10.14)
2015 Top 40 Season in Review
Q&A with Bryant product Kevin McAvoy (4.4.16)
Scouting Scratch (6.19.17)
Released (March 2019) |
Physical Description: Sturdy pitcher’s build. Solid
athlete with some projection in his lower half.
Mechanics: Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot. Effort in
his delivery. Funk in arm action where he shows the ball in front before
looping back. Short arm action behind. Slight lean to the third-base side.
1.21-1.27 seconds to the plate from the stretch. Keeps glove out front
during delivery to add some deception. Struggles to find consistent
release point.
Fastball: 90-92 mph. Tops out at 94
mph. Reportedly touched 96 mph in college. Heavy and shows sink and run
down in the zone, leading to weak contact and groundballs. Poor command
and control. Tries to nibble on the corners, but doesn’t have the command
to do that. Potential average pitch.
Slider:
80-83 mph. 11-to-5 movement. Shows best in the upper velocity range.
Sharp, with depth and tilt. Loose and slurvy in the lower velocity range.
Average potential.
Changeup: 85-87 mph. On the
firm side, but flashes fade and drop. Tendency to slow his body on the
pitch. Did not throw the pitch before being drafted. Below-average
potential.
Summation: Projects as an
organizational arm with the potential to be an emergency major league arm.
Needs to throw more strikes and improve secondaries to reach potential.
Stuff could tick up working out of the bullpen, where combination of
fastball and slider could play in middle relief role. |
