Notes from the Field (4.11.17)
Physical Description: Average size with some
projection. On the skinny side, but lacks a typical pitcher’s frame. Long
torso, short legs. Height and weight look accurate. Needs to add strength.
Mechanics: Throws from a high three-quarters arm
slot. Starts on the third base side with a quick arm. Brings arm high in
delivery and has an arm hook behind. Noticeable head whip. Works quickly.
Doesn’t consistently finish delivery.
88-90 mph. Tops out at 92 mph. Fastball velocity will decrease as he works
deeper into games. Will come out in the low-90s, but pitches primarily in
the high-80s. Fastball is on the straight side, but has advanced control
of the pitch for his age. Not a swing-and-miss pitch, but will pitch to
contact. Could add a little velocity, but unlikely to improve much.
Potential average offering, with above-average command and control
Curveball: 74-76 mph. Advanced feel and
confidence in pitch. Really snaps off and shows tight 12-to-6 break at its
best. Will throw in any count to hitters from both sides of the plate. Can
throw for strikes or bury down and out of the zone when ahead in the
count. Potential above-average to plus offering.
mph. Work in progress, clear third pitch. Firm, lacks movement at present.
Will occasionally flash late fade. Fringe-average potential.
Career Notes: Uncle was reportedly a star pitcher for the
Nicaraguan national team.
back-end starter, but presently a high-risk prospect due to distance from
the big leagues. Feel and command are ahead of stuff at present and
allowed Raudes to excel against complex-level hitters, but he will be
challenged in full-season ball. Doesn’t have the type of physical
projection you’d anticipate given his age, but will add strength. Lacks a
high ceiling, but arsenal and command profile give him a reasonably high
