Physical Description:
Small, stocky frame. No remaining projection. Athletic.
Mechanics: Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. Max-effort
delivery with a hop step, similar to former MLB reliever Carter Capps.
Long arm action with a stab and point behind.
Fastball:
91-93 mph. On the straight side. Below-average command and control
profile. Fringe-average potential.
Slider: 79-81.
Short, 10-to-4 break. Best pitch. Shows good feel and the ability to bury
it down-and-in to lefties and away from righties. Average potential.
Changeup: 84-85 mph. Some fade late. Lacks feel. On
the firm side. Has trouble landing the pitch in the zone. Below-average
potential.
Career Notes: Was born with a
hereditary leg defect that required surgery to reconstruct his ankle at 2
years old. Committed to Auburn out of high school but reportedly lost his
scholarship when the team's coach was fired. Pitched for two years at
Wallace Community College-Dothan before transferring to Division-II Tampa
for final two college seasons. Was named tournament MVP after Tampa won
the 2019 NCAA DII Championship. Reportedly had interest from Blue Jays,
Diamondbacks, and Angels before signing with Boston. First professional
experience came in Fall Instructional League in 2020.
Summation: Projects as a minor league depth arm. Lacks a carrying
pitch to succeed against more advanced hitters. Slider is best pitch and
needs to take a step forward with his command and control for his fastball
to join it as an average complimentary offering.
