Physical Description: Athletic, lean. Has room for
Hit: Left-handed, stands slightly
open with slight crouch. Has a small leg lift. Keeps hands in good
position to hit. Pull approach. Right-handed, stands more square to the
plate and crouched. Short stride; hands in good position to hit. Plus bat
speed from both sides. Left-handed swing appears more advanced; more
length in swing from right side. Very aggressive early in counts;
first-pitch swinger; wants to hit. Poor pitch recognition leads to lots of
swing-and-miss; will improve with experience. Still in the early stages of
developing an approach, but will take a walk if the pitcher doesn’t give
him anything. Potential fringe-average hit tool.
Surprising power for strength; raw power at present. Good frame to add
strength. Average-to-better power potential.
Plus arm. On-line throws with carry; can make throw from right field
warning track to second base on the fly.
Average-to-better potential in center field. First-step reads and
route-running need improvement. Speed and athleticism allow him to cover
plenty of ground. Will get better with more experience.
Run: Plus speed. Makes the defense rush. Shows instincts to steal
bases; definite base stealer potential.
Relatively new to the game of baseball and only started playing baseball a
year or so before signing. Comes from a part of Venezuela near the
Colombia border where soccer is far more popular than baseball. Twin
brother Luis Alejandro is an infielder in the Red Sox system.
Summation: Potential first division player, but high risk
and a lot of development still to go. Should be able to stick in center
field. Raw at present, but will flash at least four average-or-better
tools. Development of hit tool is key to reaching ceiling. One of the most
exciting young players in the system.
