Britton learns the hard way
(4.18.12)
Britton's revival act in Portland nearly complete (8.27.12) |
Claimed by Chicago Cubs (Feb. 2015)
Scouting Report:
3/4 arm slot with delivery similar to Jon
Lester's. Four-seam fastball sits 92-93 mph and tops out at 95 mph,
showing good downward life and hop when on top of the ball. Has struggled
to consistently hold release point, causing inconsistent fastball command.
Tends to be too deliberate early in his delivery, speed up towards the
end, and lose balance. Fastball command improved over the course of 2012.
Also throws an average 80-81 mph slider, which he refined from a curveball
that he threw earlier in his career. Loose with pitch. Does not create
consistent hard snap. Lacks deep break and power. Needs tightening to miss
bats at major-league level. Can command for a strike. Working on
developing a changeup, which currently sits at 83-86 mph. Throws the pitch
with varying arm speed and little trust when using it. Tends to float.
October 2008 Tommy John surgery caused Britton to
miss most of the 2009 season and ramp up slowly in 2010. Can get rattled
on mound and lets bad results snowball, but improved on this in 2012.
Stuff best suited for shorter outings. Late-inning reliever ceiling.
