Physical
Description: Smaller frame, muscular build. Well-filled out lower
body and strong core. Strong wrists and forearms. Physically mature.
Hit: Aggressive approach. Generates plus bat speed,
quick load, strong hands. Inconsistent contact. Approach needs refinement.
Tendency to chase pitches out of the zone, especially up. Struggles with
plate coverage against pitches on the outer third. Future fringe-average
grade.
Power: Surprising power for his size.
Strength and quickness in his swing. Ability to drive the ball with
backspin. Future average to solid-average power.
Arm:
Average arm strength. Plays best at second base. Throws on-target.
Field: Fundamentally sound. Controls body well.
Improving footwork around the bag turning double plays. Soft hands.
Average range. Future average defense. Began working out at third base in
2014 spring training, but this appears, for now, to have been in deference
to Mookie Betts, as he moved back to second base almost exclusively after
Betts’ promotion. Profiles best at second base.
Run:
Slightly above-average speed. Strong instincts. Has had a high success
rate stealing bases.
Career Notes: Brother,
Thomas, plays in the Tampa Bay system. Originally committed to the
University of North Carolina before signing. Played for the Team USA
Baseball U-18 team.
Summation: Future
second-division regular. Needs to improve approach at the plate and strike
zone awareness. Potential for four average tools at a premium defensive
position. How his hit tool progresses will determine whether he reaches
his ceiling. |
