Description: Big body; large frame. Listed size looks accurate.
Surprisingly agile given his size, but body is on the soft side. No
remaining projection.
Hit: Starts open with a
short leg lift. Stands vertical. Long swing with a high finish. Swing has
natural uppercut. Likes to get hands extended. Likes the ball down in
the zone; struggles with velocity up. Fair amount of swing-and-miss. Average pitch recognition skills;
will take a walk. Well
below-average potential hit tool.
Power:
Strong. Will show solid-average raw power in batting practice. Raw power
mostly generated by strength and natural lift in swing. Hit tool unlikely
to allow power to actualize.
Arm: Average arm
strength. Not used much given position.
Field:
First base-only profile. Has shown soft hands, but limited range. Will
make routine plays. Fringe-average defender.
Run:
Well below-average speed. Not a part of his game.
Career
Notes: Born in Colombia, moved to the United States at age 9.
Brother of infielder Jeter Downs, a 2017 Reds draftee for whom the Red Sox
traded before the start of the 2020 season.
Played outfield in college at NAIA St. Thomas, but has exclusively played
first base as a professional. Participated in 2015 Fall Instructional
League. Participated in the 2021 Americas Olympic Qualifier for Colombia.
Summation: Based on struggles at the plate
in 2018 and 2019, has likely reached peak of being an organizational
player in the high minors. Lacks a
standout tool, and given lack of defensive value, has to hit consistently
to move up the ladder. Has shown the ability to put together solid at-bats
and play passable defense at first base. Bat has been
tested by full-season pitching, and has struggled at levels above Low A. Plays hard, strong work ethic. |
