Notes from the Field (3.17.17)
Traded to
Toronto for Steve Pearce (June 2018) |
Physical
Description: Undersized, athletic middle infielder.
Hit: Right-handed hitter with a contact-oriented swing.
Starts in a slight crouch with an open stance and his hands high. Loud
hands pre-pitch. Short, compact swing, direct to the ball.
Two-handed finish.
Shows good bat control and contact skills. Has improved fluidity in swing
and pitch recognition as he has moved up the system.
Power:
Below-average power potential. Swing is more designed for line-drives than
over-the_fence power. Could run into 10 or so home runs per season.
Arm: Average arm strength. Passable at all infield
spots.
Field: Fluid in the field with
above-average range to both sides. Reads the ball off the bat well and has
a quick first step. Does a good job closing on the ball and plays angles
well. Smooth actions, soft hands. Potential above-average defender. Began
seeing time at second base and third base with Salem to develop
versatility.
Run: Above-average speed. Not a true
burner, but could steal a handful of bases per year. Very aggressive on
the basepaths, likes to test opposing defenses.
Career
Notes: Professional debut was delayed due to a left hand injury.
Signed for well below slot of $157,200. Participated in 2016 Fall
Instructional League.
Summation: Utility infielder
profile. Doesn’t have a stand-out, carrying tool, but tools other than
power are at least average or better. His defensive versatility, able to
play second base, shortstop, and third base at an at least average level,
will be key for his major league prospects. Wouldn’t be suprising to see
him start to get reps in the outfield as well when he reaches the high
minors. |
