Physical Description: Large,
thick frame. Maxed out physically, no remaining projection.
Below-average athlete.
Mechanics:
Over-the-top delivery starting from the third base side. Medium
leg kick. Fairly effortful delivery that is disconcerting for
hitters. Has a lot of moving parts and stiff body. Arm action
includes a hook behind. Hides the ball well behind his body and
is quick coming forward. Fades to first base side after release.
Fastball: 93-96 mph. Pitch shows natural
cut. Below-average command and control. Used to throw harder
when he was younger, but as velocity has diminished, so has his
effectiveness with the pitch. Average offering.
Slider: 80-82 mph. Short, vertical shape. Pitch will
flash depth and bite when he snaps it off. Above-average
offering.
Changeup: 84-86 mph. Clear
third pitch, used rarely. Didn’t throw in outings scouted in
2022. |

Career Notes: Was traded from Houston to
Pittsburgh as part of the Gerrit Cole trade in 2018. Spent a
very short amount of time with the Red Sox organization in
August/September 2021 as an MLB depth reliever before being
claimed off waivers by Oakland. Returned to the organization as
a minor league free agent in December 2021, receiving an
invitation to Major League spring training. Participated in 2022
Winter Warm-Up. Declined to exercise May 15, 2022 opt-out. Was
recalled to Boston on July 7 and designated for assignment on
July 9 after one appearance. Elected free agency after being
outrighted.
Summation: An emergency, up-and-down arm who
can be recalled in pinch without too much worry about having to
designate him for assignment when his roster spot is needed.
Slider is his best pitch, but his fastball gets hit hard,
limiting his upside and staying power. Good arm to have in the
system, but unlikely to turn into a consistent major league
contributor.
