Physical Description: Average
frame, no remaining projection.
Mechanics:
Throws from an over-the-top arm slot. Significant effort in
delivery. Quiet lower-half early, then explodes toward the plate
with a quick arm. Short arm action. Jerky delivery. Has done a
lot of work in pro ball on simplifying his mechanics.
Fastball: 91-94 mph. Tops out at 96. Fastball
is on the straight side and has struggled to miss bats. Lacks
life. Pitches up in the zone too often and has had issues
limiting home runs. Added two-seam fastball in 2015 but
apparently scrapped the pitch, per Statcast data.
Slider: 83-86 mph. Short, 11-to-5 shape. Lacks
tilt at times. Has shown the ability to miss bats at the minor
league level with the pitch.
Changeup:
84-86 mph. Throws with deceptive arm speed. Shows late drop.
Curveball: 76-78 mph. True overhand breaker
with depth when he snaps it off. Long, 12-to-6 shape with good
depth. Had used sparingly in 2017 and 2018, but has incorporated
more as of late.

Cutter: 86-88 mph. Hard pitch that breaks late.
Added pitch in 2016 and it became his primary secondary pitch.
Didn't throw in limited stint in the 2019 Arizona Fall League as
part of his rehab process, but planned to re-incorporate the
pitch in 2020. Didn’t throw pitch in outing scouted in 2021.
Career Notes: Originally drafted by the Red
Sox out of high school in the 16th round of the 2011 draft.
Second-round pick of the Athletics in 2014 after spending three
years at Clemson, where he was First Team All-ACC as a junior.
Underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2018. Returned in 2019
Arizona Fall League, but did not reincorporate cutter at that
time, using the opportunity to focus on his changeup and
curveball. Released by Oakland during the 2020 season after
spending time at their alternate training site. Opened 2021
season at the Alternate Training Site.
Summation:
Projects as an organizational depth arm capable of starting or
pitching in relief. Ceiling of an emergency up-and-down arm.
Lacks a put-away secondary pitch or any pitch that grades better
than average. Has yet to show the ability to consistently get
out major league hitters, but is the type of depth arm every
organization needs, with upside for a little more than that.
