Physical Description:
Tall left-hander with a long, athletic frame. Has ideal pitchers frame and
the body to add weight as he physically matures throughout his twenties.
Looks the part.
Mechanics: Throws from a
three-quarters arm slot, with surprisingly solid mechanics for a converted
position player. Starts closed with hands by his chest. Has a high leg
lift and turns his body before coming forward, which adds deception. Arm
action works. Short behind. Repeatable delivery.
Fastball:
93-97 mph. Tops out at 98 mph. Velocity took a step forward during the
2017 season. Previously sat 90-93 mph and topped out at 95 mph. Average
control, but needs to improve command. Potential plus offering.
Slider: 83-85 mph. Shows short, hard break. Has feel for
and confidence in the pitch. Has shown the ability to bury it down-and-in
to righties when ahead in the count. Potential above-average offering.
Splitter: 82-84 mph. Evolved from his changeup during
the 2017 season. Flashed average potential with late downward action, but
was inconsistent. Still a work in progress. Changeup was firm and
straight, thrown sparingly.
Career Notes: Drafted
as an outfielder and spent three years struggling mightily at the plate
before converting to pitching during Spring Training 2014. Had prior
experience pitching while growing up in the Dominican Republic. Moved to
Brooklyn from the Dominican Republic at age 17 with his family.
Summation: Projects as a fringe, situational reliever.
Ceiling of a solid middle reliever. Needs to improve command and
consistency with secondary offerings. Has really taken to pitching and
shown surprising feel for a converted position player. Has shown a strong
work ethic and solid makeup. Stuff regressed somewhat during the 2016
season compared to 2015. Still misses bats, but command issues make him
hittable. |
