Physical Description: Large
but athletic frame, may need to watch growth over time.
Mechanics:
Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, starting on the first
base side of the rubber. Weight transfer is not always
consistent. Easy motion, medium to high leg kick. Falls to the
first base side.
Fastball: 94-97 mph four-seamer. Significant
drop, induces groundballs. Also throws a 95-97 mph sinker with
some arm-side run, blends into his four-seamer. Collectively
throws a version of his fastball about 50% of the time.
Slider: 86-88 mph. Often leads with his slider,
which has 12-to-6 movement.
Changeup:
90-92 mph. Show-me pitch only used about 5% of the time.

Career
Notes: Signed as an international free agent with the
Phillies in 2012, but the deal was annulled. Later signed with
San Diego in 2014. Made the Padres' opening day roster in 2018
but had to undergo Tommy John surgery shortly thereafter. Was
one of the best pitchers in MLB for a stint in 2020 before
being sidelined with a biceps injury. Missed more time in 2021
with a UCL injury. Bounced around in 2022-23 without much MLB
success. Signed with Boston in June 2023 with an eye on
potentially tweaking his pitch mix and mechanics to return him
to his peak 2020 form. Was recalled to Boston for a single
appearance in August before being designated for assignment and,
ultimately, electing free agency.
Summation: Reclamation project with high
reward potential. Needs to stay healthy and regain 2020 form.
