Scouting Scratch: Quick-hitters from Lowell (9.11.17) |
Physical Description: Average height, lean frame
with long legs and a high waist. Some projection remaining.
Mechanics: Throws from a three-quarters arm
slot. Starts on the first base side of the rubber. Uses a stiff, jerky
delivery with lots of moving parts that creates deception but hinders his
control and command. Throws across his body a bit, creating some deception
but hindering his command.
Fastball:
87-90 mph, Tops out at 91 mph. Struggles to
control the pitch. Will use sparingly in some outings in favor of cutter.
Average velocity, but pitch will play below that due to lack of command
and control. Will show some arm-side run. Average to fringe-average
potential.
Cutter: 86-88 mph.
Primary pitch. Short, horizontal movement. Has feel and confidence in
pitch. Most effective against righties, where he has shown the ability to
locate the pitch in on their hands. Average potential offering.
Slider: 83-85 mph. More on the vertical
side with inconsistent shape, but will get sweepy at times as well. Will
show some depth on occasion. Velocity has increased from 80-82 mph.
Projects as a below-average offering.
Changeup:
Firm and straight. Lacks a feel for the pitch.
Has not featured consistently in outings scouted and may have been
scrapped.
Career Notes: Showed
reverse platoon splits during his pro debut.
Summation:
Has shown the ability to miss bats in the low
minors, but command and control need to take a major step forward. Cutter
is an intriguing pitch, but needs another pitch to improve to complement
it. Left-handedness gives him an advantage and with refinement could
develop into an organizational lefty type. |
