Scouting Scratch (4.19.17)
Retired (Jan. 2020) |
Physical Description:
Sturdy, filled out pitchers frame. Thick lower body. Minimal remaining
projection.
Mechanics: Throws from a high
three-quarters arm slot on the third base side of the rubber. Delivery and
arm action work. Short arm action, keeps the ball hidden until late. Quick
arm.
Fastball: 95-97 mph four-seamer.
Pitch has arm-side run and late life. Above-average control, average
command. Potential plus offering.
Changeup: 84-86 mph. Throws with
deceptive arm speed. Shows late drop. Looks like a splitter at times when
it falls off the table late. Solid-average potential.
Slider: 84-86
mph. Short, vertical break. Doesn’t feature consistently. Fringe-average
potential. Clear third pitch.
Career Notes: Was a two-way player at Florida who moved to
pitching full-time as a professional. Moved to the bullpen full-time early
in his first full season. Missed significant portions of both the 2014 and
2015 seasons for off-field reasons. Missed extended time in 2018 with
right shoulder inflamation. Had right shoulder rotator cuff surgery in
September 2018 and missed the 2019 season.
Summation:
Projects as a middle reliever. Lacks a plus out pitch to profile in a late
inning role. Fastball/changeup combination along with above-average
control give him high floor. Throws strikes, usually around the zone.
Injury history clouds his future. |
