Scouting Scratch: Tavarez, Mars and Sturgeon (5.3.17)
Released (March 2019) |
Physical Description:
Athletic, skinny at present. Some room for added strength, but doesn’t
have the frame to support significant size gains. Looks smaller than
listed 6-foot-0, 195 pounds.
Hit: Starts vertical
and slightly open from both sides of the plate, starting with his hands
low and utilizing a leg lift. From the left side swing is shorter and
tends to slash at the ball. From the right-side swing is longer with a
slight uppercut. Contact hitter profile. Line drive approach, quick to the
ball. Strong feel for hitting.
Power: Lacks
strength. Swing not designed for power. Below-average power potential.
Arm: Below-average arm strength. Arm profiles best in
left field. Fringy for center field and light for right field.
Field: Average potential. Gets good reads and will show a
quick first step and solid range. Seems to get better reads in left field
than in center field.
Run: Above-average speed.
Short, choppy strides. Speed doesn’t translate on the bases and needs to
learn to pick his spots better when stealing. Speed shows up more when
going first to third or when he gets going.
Career Notes:
Missed the first half of the 2015 season with a hand injury.
Summation: Profiles as an organizational outfielder, with
a shot as a bench outfielder at the big league level. Athletic.
Flexibility to play all three outfield spots and hit from both sides of
the plate. Lacks the power and arm strength to stick in corner outfield
full time. Tools are a weird fit in a bench role as he isn’t a burner or
plus defender. Lacks carrying tool. |
