Physical Description: Solidly
built frame. Strong upper body. Minimal remaining physical
projection. Is not a standout athlete.
Mechanics:
Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot. Delivery is on the
rough side and is something the Red Sox might tweak as he
develops. Starts on the first base side and uses a medium leg
kick. Has a slight trunk twist in his delivery before he comes
forward. Delivery is very stiff and arm-heavy. Very strong, live
arm, which he uses to make up for not effectively incorporating
his lower half into his delivery. Struggles to find a consistent
arm slot and release point at times. Will come more over the top
at times when throwing his breaking ball. Reportedly became more
consistent with his mechanics around midseason in 2018, leading
to corresponding improvement in arsenal from that scouted and
described below, and correspondingly, improvement in results.
Fastball: 92-94 mph. Tops out at 98 mph.
Delivery brings command profile into question. Will show life
down in the zone. Struggles to locate arm-side. Velocity grades
out higher than command projection. Plus potential with refined
command. Pitch shows life. Velocity dipped to 90-92 mph in the
first half of the 2018 season as he tried to change his
mechanics. After ironing out mechanics later in the 2018 it
jumped back to 92-93, T95.
Changeup:
83-85 mph. Good separation from fastball. Inconsistent feel. At
its best, will show deceptive arm speed and late drop. Potential
average offering with refinement.

Curveball: 76-79 mph. Long, 12-to-6 break.
Doesn't consistently get over the pitch and struggles to bury it
down in the zone. When he snaps it off, shows tight rotation and
depth. Average potential.
Cutter/Slider:
Reportedly worked on adding pitch during the 2018 Fall
Instructional League. Will update scouting report after seeing
pitch in action. May replace curveball as third pitch.
Career Notes: Had been committed to Texas A&M.
Had some issues with conditioning in high school, losing 40
pounds between his sophomore and junior seasons. Played for
three different high schools before transferring back to his
freshman year high school for his senior season. Signed in 2017
but did not debut until 2018. Missed time in 2018 with an
intercostal strain. Participated in 2018 Fall Instructional
League.
Summation: In the early stages
of developing his three-pitch mix. Has the durable frame you
look for in a starter, but delivery needs work as do secondary
pitches. If secondary pitches develop, projects as a number four
starter, but has the stuff to project in a bullpen role if they
don't. Wide gap between what he is now and his potential, with a
lot of development remaining. Reportedly also throws a slider,
but has not shown it in any of the games scouted.
