  Scouting Report & Links

Physical Description: Tall, sturdy frame. Average athlete. Athleticism has decreased as he has physically matured.

Hit: Starts square in a slight crouch. Leg kick timing device. Below-average bat speed, struggles with velocity. Swing has some length. Hit tool is a major question mark. Will always have swing-and-miss in his game. Can struggle to recognize breaking balls. Knows the strike zone and is willing to work the count and take a walk. Well below-average potential hit tool.

Power: Above-average raw power. Swing has loft and is on an uphill plane. How much his power will play in-game will be determined by how much contact he makes. Potential fringe-average game power.

Run: Average speed. Good instincts on the bases.

Field: Potential solid-average right fielder. Decreased athleticism makes him a better fit in a corner, but could play center in a pinch. Good instincts in the outfield. Average range.

Arm: Above-average arm.
Career Notes: Considered a potential five-tool prospect out of high school, the Diamondbacks signed him out of a commitment to Arizona State. Put together a fine year in 2017, vaulting his prospect status upward. Struggled as he started to face more advanced pitching in 2018. Boston acquired him from Arizona for Blake Swihart early in 2019. Struggled initially in Portland (.161/.307/.226, 44% K rate in 19 games), but fixed some issues with his swing along with hitting coach Lance Zawadzki after a demotion to Salem and hit better the rest of the season. Was added to the 40-man roster in November 2019. Played at the Alternate Training Site for the final three weeks of the 2020 season. Opened 2021 season at the Alternate Training Site. Despite solid statistical season in Worcester, was designated for assignment following the trade deadline in 2021 and was claimed by Seattle. Made his MLB debut in a brief call-up to the Mariners in August 2023. Returned to the organization as a minor league free agent in 2023, serving a reserve outfielder role in Worcester until being released in July.

Summation: Projects as a solid organizational outfielder. Ceiling of an up-and-down bench outfielder. Lack of hit tool limits upside. Other tools all grade out around average, but has far too much swing-and-miss in his game. Elite makeup and work ethic. Leaves it all on the field and is a very vocal and supportive teammate.
